The definitive biography of Cyrus Dallin is by Rell G. Francis. Titled Cyrus E. Dallin: Let Justice Be Done, it was published in 1976 for the Springville Museum of Art, in Springville, Utah. Francis’ book provides the most complete catalog to date, with hundreds of black-and-white photographs. His insight into Dallin’s personality and context have set the terms for our current discussion.

This fine book is currently out of print, but it may be reprinting during the summer of 2001. Copies are available at a number of local libraries, including Arlington’s Robbins Library. Copies can also be obtained from used-book stores, including web-based booksellers who search for out-of-print titles. It’s worth the effort, and an enjoyable read.

More than 30 examples of Dallin’s work are on display at the Springville Museum of Art, in Springville, Utah (126 East 400 South, Springville, UT, 84663; 801-489-2727), the largest art museum in the state. Dallin’s legacy to his birthplace was a substantial body of work which formed the original core of this Museum’s fine collection.
